“I have a funny feeling he might be in trouble.”

“But how could he be in trouble? We saw him not long ago.” I had spoken too soon. When we went outside, there was a ruckus down the street. The sheriff and his deputy were running and a crowd had gathered.

“We found him between two buildings in the alley.” Two men whom I didn’t know, because I don’t know everybody around here anyway, had carried him and put him down near a water trough. The sheriff was questioning them. When we approached the crowd, we tried to get a look at who it was.
